Welcome to Reel Facts VLT Staff Training

In this program, you will learn about:

  • Responsible gambling - what it is and how VLT retailers and their staff can promote healthy attitudes towards gambling
  • Problem gambling and some of the signs of gambling addiction
  • The words and actions that tend to reinforce the gambler's myths that lead to unhealthy behaviours and how to avoid their use, and
  • Programs and services that are available to help reduce the incidence of problem gambling.

What is Reel Facts VLT Staff Training?

Reel Facts is a social responsibility training program designed to educate VLT Retailers and their staff on how to recognise the differences between responsible and problem gambling behaviour and appropriately respond to someone who may have a problem with their gambling.

  • Develop an awareness of responsible gambling

Who needs to take this program?

Reel Facts certification is mandatory for the following full-time and part-time staff:

  • Owners, managers, supervisors; and

Need proof of your certification? No problem.

Licensee staff must provide proof of Reel Facts certification at the request of an AGLC Inspector. Failure to present proof of Reel Facts certification may result in disciplinary action. Proof of Reel Facts certification includes:

  • paper printed versions that have a QR code
  • the Personal Information page printed from the staff member's SMART account
  • a plastic card (that does not have a QR code)
  • clear images of any of the above (i.e., image, photograph or screen shot saved on the staff member's mobile device/phone)

Note: AGLC policy requires all licensees to keep a log of staff certifications for the positions where SMART certification is required, and for all employees to show proof of their certification(s) on request.

Learners with online SMART Programs accounts

Most people get certified online, so they have access to their information. To get proof of your certification, sign in to the SMART Programs account you used to get certified, using the email address and password assigned to it. If you forgot your password, click here to retrieve it.

If you can't remember the email address on your account, or if you can't find information about the programs you completed, send us an email or call 1-877-436-6336 (toll-free in Alberta) between 8:15 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. The SMART Programs office is closed on weekends, statutory holidays, and from December 24 through January 1st.

Proof of your certification is saved to the Personal Information and Completion Status pages of your SMART Programs account (sign in and follow the on-screen instructions to see it). Print a copy of your card or save an image of it to your mobile device/phone.
